Emergency Bra Saves Lives

A new bra for $29.95 on the market promises to do more than just make women look sexy -- it promises to save lives, too.

Dr. Elena Bodnar won the Ig Nobel Public Health prize in 2009 for her invention aptly named, the "Emergency Bra." The sexy lingerie "can quickly be converted into a pair of protective face masks, one for the brassiere wearer and one to be given to some needy bystander" in the event an emergency.

Bodnar says the bra-turned-masks could have been used in the Sept. 11 since they have been proven to filter out harmful particles.

How It Works

The goal of any emergency respiratory device is to achieve tight fixation and full coverage. Luckily, the wonderful design of the bra is already in the shape of a face mask and so with the addition of a few design features, the Emergency Bra enhances the efficiency of minimizing contaminated bypass air flow.

1) Emergency bra shoulder straps which easily convert into adjustable head straps, providing firm fixation of the mask
2) Flex inserts along the top rim of the bra caps which allow to shape the masks tightly around the nose bridge area
3) Inner cap liner/filter which acts like a butterfly valve during inhale cycles
